Welcome to Stress Free Math For Kids! I'm Amy Porter and I am a math teacher with a unique story. I may now be the teacher with the reputation to have a superpower of making math fun for everyone, but the truth is, I didn't always have a love for math. As a student, I was the one hiding a novel behind my geometry book.
My journey to becoming a math teacher began with a specialization in reading, and I taught English and reading for my first job at Ho'okena Elementary School on the Big Island of Hawaii. Over the years, I discovered my love for teaching math and started to see the patterns and connections in how math relates to everyday life and science. I also gained specialized knowledge as a dyslexia therapist, which led me to wanting to learn all I could about right-brain teaching methods for math. My goal is to share this knowledge and help parents, teachers, and tutors to make math more fun and engaging for their students.
I am a certified teacher with 25 years of experience teaching pre K-8th in public and private schools in 4 states. During this time, I trained as both a reading and math specialist, with a particular passion for teaching math. I worked as a gifted pullout program teacher and testing coordinator. I also had the opportunity to work for several years as the founding program director for a math learning center specializing in right-brain teaching methods.
More recently, I have been a private tutor who works with children ranging from highly gifted to having extreme special needs. I also teach small group math classes for homeschool students and math intervention groups at a public charter school.
To keep my skills sharp I am an active participant in math conferences and math educator groups, constantly seeking new and innovative ways to improve my teaching and support all students. Additionally, I am an avid reader of books on math education, always looking to expand my knowledge and understanding of how to unlock any child's math potential.
