For tutoring middle school math, my favorite book is Everything You Need to Ace Math in One Big Fat Notebook. I also recommend this book for homeschool parents or any parents who want to help with homework, especially those who need a review of middle school math for themselves!
This book has 6 units:
- The Number System
- Ratios, Proportions and Percents
- Expressions and Equations
- Geometry
- Statistics and Probability
- The Coordinate Plane and Functions
This is a condensed version of the most important standards in 6th-7th grade math (there is another book for pre algebra.)
Students love the way the pages are color coded and easy to read, with clear examples and drawings. Vocabulary words are highlighted in yellow, the definitions are shown in green highlighter, blue emphasizes important people, places, dates, and terms. So many kids have commented to me on how this makes the math less overwhelming and easier to understand.
As a parent wrote in an Amazon review, “This book has not only helped explain concepts to my 12 year old in a way she easily can understand and follow without a million steps to get to a solution, but it also helped me remember things I may have forgotten and to be able to explain things to her in a more productive way. “
For each unit there are 10 practice problems, with the answers available on the next page for self checking. It is a great way to do a quick check on a student’s understanding of a particular topic.
