Welcome to a look at how I go about tutoring multiplication and division! One of the things I love about working with kids outside of the public school system is being able to teach interrelated concepts together without worrying about having to stick to a pacing guide or standards. Recently I was asked to tutor a small group of homeschool students (3rd/4th grade) in multiplication and division. I am teaching integrated multiplication and division, fractions as division, and the concepts of multiples and factors all together. We are doing it in a hands on way using visual patterns, games, and manipulatives, and having so much fun!
A complete digital guide with details of what we did each session and the rationale behind it, pictures of the kids and their work, and lists of materials/resources we used with links is now available. Download it on my Stan Store
Here are a few highlights…
Seeing multiplication visually
Lots of games!
Using manipulatives from play dough to integer blocks
Visual factors!
And so much more! Tutoring multiplication and division in an integrated way encourages the kids to think more deeply about the connections of math and understand the processes and vocabulary much better. It’s also a lot of fun!
