Sushi Go is a fast paced strategy card game made by Gamewright. I haven’t been disappointed in one of Gamewright’s games yet, and this was no exception. It is one of those great games (as most of Gamewright’s are) that is equally fun for kids and adults. It has won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award and also designated Parents’ Choice Recommended. The sushi illustrations are very well done and add a whimsical element to the game.

The game can be played with 2-5 players. My opinion is that it is fun with 2 or 3 but a lot better with 4 or 5. However, some Amazon reviews correctly note that playing with only 2 actually requires a higher level of strategy. Skills reinforced in the game according to the official description are strategy, probability and visual discrimination. However, there are also computations to determine your score, so the game can easily be used for practice with input/output tables, addition/subtraction, and basic multiplication.

The basic rules are that each player simultaneously chooses one card from their hand (7-10 cards depending on the number of players) to keep. They place this card face up on the table and then pass the rest of their hand to the next player. All players choose a card to keep from the now smaller hand and pass the rest of the hand again. This continues until all cards are played. Score is then tallied (the goal is to obtain the highest score by collecting sets of cards) and a new round starts. A full game consists of 3 rounds.

Variations

Variations of the Sushi Go card game include:

  • Sushi Go Party is an expanded version for up to 8 players. This version has all of the original cards plus more for a total of 181 cards (instead of 108) and 22 menu titles to increase scoring options. It includes the soy sauce cards that were previously only available in a booster pack. It also comes with pawns and a game board for scoring which the original set does not include. Game time is about 30 minutes instead of 15.
